Istanbul
Days 1–3 & 9–10 · 3 nightsImperial Istanbul in three days: Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and a Bosphorus cruise, with a final night back in the city before you fly home.
From Istanbul's imperial grandeur, through Cappadocia's otherworldly valleys, the sun-soaked Turkish Riviera, the ruins of Ephesus and Pamukkale's shimmering terraces: five regions, one unforgettable journey.
This 10 day Turkey tour is our most complete single-trip itinerary, combining Istanbul's imperial history, Cappadocia's surreal valleys, the sun-soaked Turkish Riviera at Antalya, the ancient city of Ephesus and the shimmering white terraces of Pamukkale. It genuinely covers the full breadth of what makes Turkey such an extraordinary country to explore.
It follows the celebrated Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya and Pamukkale route of our 10 Days Mediterranean Turkey Tour, with one significant addition: a full day exploring Ephesus, among the best-preserved ancient cities anywhere in the Mediterranean world and the ancient capital of the Roman province of Asia. Walking its marble streets past the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre connects Istanbul's Byzantine and Ottoman layers with the classical world that came before.
Along the way you hike through Cappadocia's volcanic valleys and descend into an ancient underground city, ride a boat beneath a waterfall that tumbles straight into the Mediterranean at Antalya, and finish by walking barefoot across Pamukkale's dazzling travertine terraces.
A Turkey tour package that starts and ends in Istanbul keeps planning simple. Instead of arranging flights, hotels, guides and transfers one by one, you receive one complete 10 day Turkey itinerary: nine nights of hotel accommodation with breakfast, three domestic flights with a 15 kg baggage allowance each, all airport transfers, all entrance fees and taxes, and licensed English-speaking guides on every guided day.
Ten days is long enough to see the famous highlights without rushing. You spend a day and a half in Istanbul's Old City, two days in Istanbul and Cappadocia combined with a flight between them, a full day in Antalya, a full day at Ephesus, a day at Pamukkale and a free day before your flight back to Istanbul. It is a Turkey itinerary for 10 days that balances history, nature and relaxation.
In Istanbul you visit Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar and the Rüstem Paşa Mosque, and cruise the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia. In Cappadocia you explore Devrent Valley, Paşabağ, the Göreme Open-Air Museum, Uçhisar Castle, Red Valley, Pigeon Valley and the Özkonak underground city, with an optional sunrise hot air balloon flight.
In Antalya you pass through Hadrian's Gate, wander the Kaleiçi old harbour, see the Yivli Minaret and the Clock Tower and visit the Düden waterfalls by boat. You then walk the marble streets of the Ephesus ancient city, visit the House of the Virgin Mary and finish with the Pamukkale travertine terraces and the Roman healing city of Hierapolis. Together they make this one of the most complete Turkey tours covering Ephesus and Pamukkale.
Join a small group Turkey tour or arrange a private Turkey tour exclusively for your own party, and customize the program to suit you. Stay in your choice of 3, 4 or 5-star hotels, boutique hotels or cave hotels in Cappadocia. The tour price is $2,349 per person, a 40% deposit reserves your place and the balance is payable on arrival. It suits first-time visitors, couples, friends and history lovers who want a well-organised Turkey tour from Istanbul.
As an Istanbul-based Turkey tour operator with 5 stars on TripAdvisor, The History Travel Agency organises every stage personally, from your airport welcome to your final transfer, and our team is available on WhatsApp throughout your trip.
Good to know. The Cappadocia sunrise balloon flight and the Istanbul Dinner Cruise are optional and best arranged in advance. Interior access to Hagia Sophia is not included on Day 2.
Istanbul gives you Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks within a few kilometres of each other. Cappadocia is an entirely different planet of valleys, cave churches and underground cities. Antalya adds the Mediterranean, Ephesus the classical world and Pamukkale a natural finale.
Domestic flights connect the regions that are too far apart to drive comfortably, so your time goes on sightseeing instead of on the road.
From the Bosphorus to the Aegean and the Turquoise Coast, your route links Turkey's most distinctive regions. Follow the six stops below in order: each card shows when you arrive, how long you stay and how you travel on to the next region.
Arrive, settle in and spend a full day on foot through the Old City: Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and the Grand Bazaar, then a Bosphorus cruise before you fly on.
Two guided days in a volcanic dreamscape: Devrent Valley, Paşabağ, the Göreme Open-Air Museum and Uçhisar Castle in the north, then Red Valley, Pigeon Valley and Özkonak Underground City in the south.
A full day on the Turkish Riviera: Hadrian's Gate, the Kaleiçi old harbour, the Yivli Minaret and the Clock Tower, followed by lunch at the Düden Waterfall and a boat ride to see it fall into the sea.
After your flight to İzmir you explore Ephesus: Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the ruins of the Temple of Artemis and the House of the Virgin Mary above the ancient city.
Walk barefoot across the white travertine terraces and explore the Roman healing city of Hierapolis, then enjoy a free morning at your own pace before your transfer to the airport.
Your final night is back in Istanbul, where a driver meets you on arrival. After a relaxed breakfast the next morning you are transferred to the airport for your onward or international departure.
If you are planning a 10-day Turkey itinerary, the order of the stops matters as much as the sights. This programme opens with two nights in Istanbul for the Old City, then flies you to Cappadocia for two days of valleys and underground cities, and on to Antalya for the old harbour and the Düden Waterfalls.
The route then turns west to Ephesus and Pamukkale, before a final night in Istanbul. It is a Turkey tour with Ephesus and Pamukkale that keeps every day varied, with ancient ruins, mountain landscapes and coastline in turn.
Ten days, five regions and domestic flights between them. Tap any day to read the details.

You land in the landscape you will explore over the next two days.

Today's flight to İzmir lands you at the doorstep of one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean world, once the capital of the Roman province of Asia.
Transfer to the airport, then fly west to the Aegean.
At its peak home to perhaps a quarter of a million people. Walk the marble-paved Curetes Street, past the two-storey facade of the Library of Celsus and into the 25,000-seat Great Theatre.
The ruins of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Tucked into wooded hills above Ephesus and believed by tradition to be her final home.
Today's finale is a natural one: the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale, the "Cotton Castle", formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich thermal water cascades down the hillside.
Layer upon layer of calcium carbonate form pools that shimmer brilliant white in the sun. Walking the terraces barefoot is one of the most memorable experiences of the trip.
An ancient city renowned in Roman times for its therapeutic hot springs.
Don't forget to bring your swimsuit.
With the major sightseeing complete, today is yours at a slower pace: one more walk across the travertines, a relaxed breakfast, or simply time to reflect on everything you have seen.
Enjoy the morning at your own pace.
Later you are transferred to the airport; a driver meets you on arrival for your final night in Istanbul.
After a final relaxed breakfast, the tour comes to an end with a transfer to the airport for your onward or international departure.
From Istanbul's imperial grandeur to the valleys of Cappadocia, Antalya's coastline, the ruins of Ephesus and Pamukkale's terraces: a complete discovery of Turkey's ancient wonders and natural marvels.
Read ahead about what you will see: the history, the landscapes and the places on each day of the programme.
Imperial Istanbul in three days: Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and a Bosphorus cruise, with a final night back in the city before you fly home.
Fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches, hiking in Red Valley and the Özkonak underground city, with an optional sunrise hot air balloon flight over the valleys of central Anatolia.
The Turkish Riviera at its best: Hadrian's Gate, the Kaleiçi old harbour, the Yivli Minaret and the Düden Waterfalls, finished with a boat ride to the waterfall that drops into the sea.
A full day in one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean world: the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Temple of Artemis ruins and the House of the Virgin Mary.
The shimmering white travertine terraces of the Cotton Castle and the Roman healing city of Hierapolis, followed by a free morning before your flight back to Istanbul for the final night.
Add a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Cappadocia or an evening Bosphorus Dinner Cruise in Istanbul. Both are optional and best arranged in advance, so mention them when you inquire.
Istanbul was the capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and its monuments stand within walking distance of each other. Your first full day follows the Sultanahmet peninsula from Topkapı Palace to the Grand Bazaar.
On the third morning you add tilework at the Rüstem Paşa Mosque, the Spice Bazaar and a cruise between Europe and Asia, then fly on to Cappadocia. You return for a final night before departure.
Insider tip: Dress modestly for mosque visits and wear comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets of the Old City.
Topkapı was the home of the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years. Your guide leads you through the courtyards and rooms where the empire was governed, explaining court life, imperial power and the palace's setting above the Bosphorus.
Completed by Emperor Justinian in 537 AD, Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral in the world for close to a thousand years. You see its great dome and facade on the guided walk. Interior access is not included in this tour.
The Blue Mosque is celebrated for its more than 20,000 hand-painted İznik tiles and its cascade of domes. It stands in Sultanahmet beside Hagia Sophia, so the two great monuments of the Old City can be seen in a single walk.
The Hippodrome was the historic site of ancient chariot races in Constantinople. Today it is an open square in the heart of the Old City, and your guide explains how it connects the city's Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman layers.
The Grand Bazaar is one of the world's largest and oldest covered markets. Wander its vaulted lanes past ceramics, lamps, textiles, jewellery and carpets, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere at your own pace.
This small mosque is celebrated for its intricate İznik tilework, with painted panels covering its walls in rich colours. It is a quieter stop than the big imperial mosques and rewards a slow, close look at the craftsmanship.
The fragrant Spice Bazaar is packed with spices, teas, dried fruits and sweets. Stalls are piled high with colour and aroma, making it an easy place to pick up edible souvenirs before your Bosphorus cruise.
A scenic cruise between Europe and Asia passes landmarks such as Beylerbeyi Palace and the elegant wooden yalı villas lining the shore. It shows Istanbul's skyline and waterfront from the water, a view no walking tour can match.
Depending on your arrival time on Day 1, you may join the optional evening Dinner Cruise. You glide along the Bosphorus past illuminated palaces and mosques, a memorable first night. It is optional and best arranged in advance.
Volcanic eruptions millions of years ago left central Anatolia covered in soft rock, which wind, water and generations of people carved into valleys, churches and whole cities.
Two guided days cover the north and the south: Devrent and Paşabağ, Avanos, Göreme and Uçhisar, then Red Valley, Çavuşin, Pigeon Valley and the underground city of Özkonak.

Insider tip: If you add the optional sunrise balloon flight, arrange it in advance and dress in layers: Cappadocia mornings are cool.
Devrent Valley is famous for wind-carved fairy chimneys that seem to suggest animals and figures, depending on the light. It is a short, easy walk among the rock cones and a favourite stop for photographs.
Paşabağ has distinctive mushroom-shaped rock formations that crowd the valley floor. It is the classic fairy-chimney landscape Cappadocia is known for, and the flat paths make it easy to explore on foot.
Avanos is a riverside pottery town where potters have long worked the local clay. It is a relaxed stop between the valleys, with workshops and shops where you can see the craft up close.
In the afternoon you explore the rock-cut churches of the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Carved into the volcanic rock and decorated inside, they show how early Christian communities lived and worshipped in these valleys.
Uçhisar Castle is a honeycombed rock citadel with panoramic views across nearly all of Cappadocia. It is the perfect place to finish the day and see the valleys you have explored from high above.
Explore the rock-cut churches of Red Valley with a 5 km hike through the Güllüdere Valley. Walking is the best way to feel the scale of the cliffs, canyons and fairy chimneys in this part of Cappadocia.
Çavuşin is a cliffside village of old cave dwellings climbing the rock face. A short walk shows how people once lived directly inside the volcanic rock, and the views over the surrounding valley are excellent.
Pigeon Valley is renowned for its hand-carved cliff coops. Locals carved many small niches into the rock for pigeons, whose droppings were used to fertilise the fields, giving the valley its name.
In the afternoon you descend into Özkonak Underground City, where early Christians lived in genuine fear and faith. Narrow tunnels and rooms carved below the surface show how whole communities hid from danger.
Consider an optional sunrise hot air balloon ride, best arranged in advance and widely regarded as one of the most spectacular experiences in all of Turkey. Flights depend on the weather and cannot be guaranteed.
Antalya is the Mediterranean at its most generous: turquoise water below the Taurus Mountains and an old harbour town packed with Roman, Seljuk and Ottoman landmarks.
One full guided day covers Hadrian's Gate, Kaleiçi, the Yivli Minaret and the Clock Tower, then the Düden Waterfalls for lunch beside the water and a boat ride to see the falls drop into the sea.

Insider tip: Bring sunscreen and a hat: the old town and waterfall park are mostly open-air.
Hadrian's Gate is a triple-arched marble gateway built in 130 AD. It marks the entrance to the old town, and passing through it is the best way to begin exploring Kaleiçi on foot.
Kaleiçi is Antalya's beautifully preserved old town, built around an atmospheric old harbour. Its narrow lanes, historic houses and sea views make it an easy place to walk, photograph and relax.
The Yivli (Fluted) Minaret was built by the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad and is one of Antalya's best-known landmarks. Nearby, the historic Clock Tower and the Roman King Road give sweeping Mediterranean views.
The Upper Düden Waterfall sits in a natural park where you enjoy lunch beside the cascading water. Shade, greenery and the sound of falling water make it a cool, relaxing break in the middle of the day.
A memorable boat ride takes you to see the waterfall dropping dramatically straight into the Mediterranean Sea. Seeing the cliff and the falls from the water is the highlight of your day in Antalya.
Ephesus was the capital of the Roman province of Asia and, at its peak, home to perhaps a quarter of a million people. It is the addition that sets this tour apart from our Mediterranean route.
Walking its marble streets past the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre connects Istanbul's Byzantine and Ottoman layers with the classical world that came before.

Insider tip: Wear sturdy shoes: the marble streets are worn smooth, and there is little shade, so bring water and a hat.
Ephesus was the capital of the Roman province of Asia and, at its peak, home to perhaps a quarter of a million people. Walking the marble-paved Curetes Street, it is easy to picture daily Roman life two thousand years ago.
The two-storey facade of the Library of Celsus is the best-known monument of Ephesus. Your guide explains the building's history and how it fits into the layout of the Roman city around it.
The Great Theatre held around 25,000 people. Climb the tiers to understand how large the Roman city was, and imagine the crowds that gathered here for performances and public events.
You also visit the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Little remains standing today, but the site still shows how important the goddess was to the city.
You close the day at the serene House of the Virgin Mary, tucked into wooded hills above Ephesus and believed by tradition to be her final home. The quiet setting makes a peaceful contrast with the ruins.
Pamukkale's brilliant white terraces were formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich thermal water cascaded down the hillside, depositing calcium carbonate into shimmering pools.
Above the terraces lies Hierapolis, renowned in Roman times for its hot springs. A free morning before your flight to Istanbul gives you time for one more walk.
Insider tip: Bring a swimsuit and towel. The Cleopatra Pool entrance fee is not included in the tour price.

Practical suggestions based on the route and the way the itinerary is paced.
This route is a strong first introduction to Turkey. You see imperial Istanbul, Cappadocia's landscapes, the Mediterranean coast, the classical world of Ephesus and a natural finale at Pamukkale, all with flights between regions.
Plan for the panorama from Uçhisar Castle, the fairy chimneys of Paşabağ and Devrent, the Library of Celsus at Ephesus, the Düden Waterfall meeting the sea and the white terraces of Pamukkale.
The route works like a timeline: Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul, early Christian Cappadocia, Seljuk and Roman Antalya, Roman Ephesus and the Hierapolis of Roman times at Pamukkale.
Cappadocia's volcanic valleys, the Düden Waterfalls and the thermal travertine terraces of Pamukkale give the tour its natural marvels, with hiking in Red Valley and boat time on the Mediterranean.
Cobbled streets in Istanbul, polished marble at Ephesus and valley paths in Cappadocia all call for comfortable, grippy walking shoes. Pamukkale's terraces are walked barefoot, so easy-to-remove footwear helps.
Spring and autumn bring mild days and thinner crowds, which suits long walking days. Summer is hot on the coast and at Ephesus, so start sightseeing early and carry water, a hat and sunscreen.
Green valleys and mild days make spring ideal for walking in Cappadocia and Ephesus, and for photography across every region of the tour.
Hot on the coast and at Ephesus, with warm days that suit Antalya's waterfalls. Start early each day, bring sun protection and drink plenty of water.
Warm weather, thinner crowds and soft light make autumn another excellent time for the whole route, from Istanbul to the Pamukkale terraces.
Cool and quiet, with fewer visitors at the major sites. Cappadocia can be snow-dusted and beautiful, so pack warm layers and a rain jacket.
Every itinerary is a starting point we're happy to adjust to you, from hotel style and private or small-group travel to optional extras and your preferred pace.
Reach a real person on WhatsApp before, during and after your trip, so questions about transfers, flights or meeting points are answered quickly.
Every guided day is led by a professional, licensed English-speaking guide who brings the history of each palace, valley and ancient city to life.
Book with confidence: your voucher and itinerary arrive by email right away, so you know exactly what is booked and what happens each day.
