Walk Through 2,000 Years of Empire in a Single Day
Istanbul was once Constantinople, and before that Byzantium — capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman
empires in turn. The Istanbul Historical Treasures Tour threads together the five monuments that tell that
story best, all within walking distance of one another in the Sultanahmet old city. Your guide meets you at
your hotel or a nearby meeting point and leads you first to the Roman Hippodrome, once the
center of Byzantine sporting and political life, where the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpentine Column from Delphi
and the German Fountain still stand. From there you'll see the Blue Mosque, one of Istanbul's
largest and most photographed mosques, before continuing to Topkapi Palace, the seat of the
Ottoman sultans for four centuries, and the Hagia Sophia Museum, the single building that
best captures Istanbul's identity as a meeting point of Christianity and Islam. The day concludes at the
Grand Bazaar, one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets, still trading in carpets,
jewelry, ceramics and the evil-eye amulets Istanbul is famous for.
Travelers who'd like to go further can request the Private Tour, which adds two sites reserved
for private groups only: the underground Basilica Cistern and the intimate
Little Hagia Sophia Mosque. Lunch, hotel transfers, museum entrances and an English-speaking
professional guide are included either way — you simply choose the pace and group size that suits you.

Roman Era
Roman Hippodrome
Once the center of sporting and political life in Constantinople, the Hippodrome
is now an open square lined with three ancient monuments: the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, the
Serpentine Column brought from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, and the German Fountain, a gift from
Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque)
One of Istanbul's largest and most recognizable mosques, famed for its six minarets
and more than 20,000 handmade Iznik tiles lining the interior in shades of blue — the source of its
popular name. It remains an active place of worship on the Istanbul skyline.

Byzantine & Ottoman Era
Hagia Sophia Museum
Built as a Byzantine cathedral, later converted into an Ottoman imperial mosque and
for decades a museum, Hagia Sophia is one of the largest and most influential works of Roman-style
architecture ever built. Its surviving Byzantine mosaics sit alongside Islamic calligraphy medallions —
a rare, layered record of both empires under one dome.

Get the Most Out of Your Day in Old Istanbul
Based on thousands of Sultanahmet itineraries, here's how to make this specific tour smoother, cheaper
and more memorable — matched to how you're traveling.
Traveling as a Couple or Small Family?
The Group tour covers everything most travelers want to see and is the better value. Save the
Private upgrade for a special occasion or if flexible timing matters more than price.
Photography-Focused Travelers
Choose the Private tour: the added Basilica Cistern is one of Istanbul's most photogenic interiors,
and a private guide can adjust pacing to catch better light at Hagia Sophia's upper gallery.
Budget-Conscious Groups
Book Group tickets for the whole party in one submission — the ticket stepper below calculates your
live total, so you know the exact price before you send your request.
1
Dress modestly for the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia — shoulders and knees covered; scarves are provided for women at the entrance.
2
Wear slip-on shoes — you'll remove them before entering the Blue Mosque, and it saves time re-tying laces.
3
Bring cash in Turkish lira for the Grand Bazaar — bargaining is expected, and cash gets you a better price than cards at most stalls.

Book 24-48 hours ahead in peak season (April-June, September-October) since group tour seats and private guides fill up early.
🌷
Spring
Mild, blooming Gülhane Park nearby — book early, it's peak season.
☀️
Summer

responsive throughout the planning.

We wanted a honeymoon that balanced history and culture with a bit of fun, and worried
the language barrier might be an issue. It wasn't — communication was smooth from planning through the
tour itself.
"History, culture and a great time — exactly the balance we hoped for."
