Temple of Artemis
01The Artemision was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today one re-erected column stands in an open field, so your guide's context matters: the scale of what is missing is the story.
Two UNESCO World Heritage sites in one compact escape: the marble streets of ancient Ephesus on Day 1, and the blindingly white travertine terraces of Pamukkale on Day 2. Flights, hotel, lunches and guides are all taken care of.
Discover the rich tapestry of ancient history and breathtaking natural landscapes on this 2-day Pamukkale and Ephesus tour from Istanbul, which combines Ephesus and Pamukkale, two of Turkey's most visited UNESCO World Heritage sites. Domestic flights take you from Istanbul to Izmir and back, so almost every hour of the two days is spent at the sites rather than on the road.
On the first day, you delve into the historic splendor of Ephesus, exploring its remarkably preserved streets and landmarks such as the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, and visiting the House of the Virgin Mary. The journey continues on the second day with Pamukkale, famous for its striking white travertine terraces and the ruins of ancient Hierapolis, where you can walk the terraces or, optionally, swim in the Cleopatra Swimming Pool.
Travellers who want to see Ephesus and Pamukkale from Istanbul usually face a long overland journey. This 2 day Ephesus and Pamukkale tour by plane removes that problem. Your domestic flights take you from Istanbul to Izmir and back, a driver and a licensed guide meet you on arrival, and one night in a Kusadasi hotel with breakfast sits between the two sightseeing days. It is one of the most efficient ways to cover the best of the Aegean in two days.
Ephesus is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On Day 1 you walk through the ancient city with a licensed English-speaking guide and see the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, the Great Theatre, the Roman baths and the Old Harbor. The day also includes the House of the Virgin Mary, a quiet pilgrimage site above the city, and a lunch at a local restaurant.
On Day 2 you visit Pamukkale, the “Cotton Castle”, where hot springs have left white travertine terraces and shallow thermal pools on the hillside. Above them lies Hierapolis, an ancient spa city with a colonnaded main street, a Roman theatre and one of Anatolia's largest necropolises. Together they are listed by UNESCO. If you wish, you can swim in the Cleopatra Swimming Pool, a thermal pool with ancient columns lying beneath the surface. After the visit you are transferred to the airport for your flight back to Istanbul.
The price of $775 per person covers domestic flights, one night B&B accommodation in Kusadasi, two local restaurant lunches, all sightseeing in the program, entrance fees, airport transfers, transport in air-conditioned vehicles and licensed English-speaking guides. International flights, dinner, the Cleopatra Pool entrance, travel insurance, personal expenses and tips are not included, so you always know what to budget.
This 2 day Turkey tour from Istanbul suits first-time visitors, couples, history lovers and travellers who have a few free days at the end of an Istanbul stay. It is also a practical option for families and small groups who want a guided, well-organized trip without arranging flights, hotels and entrance tickets themselves. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the sites, although the tour operates throughout the year.
Good to know: this tour has an early start on Day 1 and involves a moderate amount of walking on uneven archaeological surfaces. Please contact us before booking if you have any mobility concerns, and we will advise on the best way to enjoy the sites.
Ephesus and Pamukkale are about three hours apart by road, which is why many visitors need three or more days. By flying to Izmir and spending your single night in Kusadasi, this program keeps both sites in reach within two days while still giving you a guided Ephesus day and a guided Pamukkale day.
The result is a trip built for travellers with limited time: one ancient Roman city, one natural wonder, a hotel night on the Aegean coast and a straightforward return to Istanbul.
This immersive tour involves a moderate amount of walking across archaeological sites with uneven surfaces — the large Ephesus ancient city and the slopes of Hierapolis both require sturdy footwear and a basic level of fitness.
Morning flight to Izmir, then a guided Ephesus tour and the House of the Virgin Mary.
One night B&B on the Aegean coast, with the Day 2 pickup between 7:30 and 8:00 AM.
Travertine terraces, the ancient city and the optional Cleopatra Pool, then the flight to Istanbul.
Fly to Izmir for Ephesus, sleep in Kusadasi, tour Pamukkale and Hierapolis the next day, then fly back to Istanbul.
The 2 day Pamukkale and Ephesus tour itinerary is built around two full sightseeing days and a single overnight stay in Kusadasi. Day 1 is devoted to Ephesus: after an early flight from Istanbul to Izmir, you are met at the airport and taken straight to the ancient city. On Day 2 you leave Kusadasi after breakfast for Pamukkale and Hierapolis, then fly back to Istanbul in the evening.
On each full tour day you visit at least four places, and the lists below show every stop in the order you will see them. Your licensed guide may adjust the order slightly to avoid crowds or the midday heat, but the program always includes the same highlights: the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus and the House of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus, and the travertine terraces, Hierapolis and the Cleopatra Pool in Pamukkale.
This Ephesus and Pamukkale itinerary works best for travellers who want a guided introduction to the Aegean without the cost of a longer package. Domestic flights, hotel, two lunches, entrance fees and airport transfers are all organized for you, so the two days are spent exploring instead of planning. Comfortable walking shoes are important, as both sites involve moderate walking on uneven ground.
Two days, two flights and every stop below is part of the standard program. Tap a day to see the places you will visit, your meals and where you will sleep. Timings are approximate and may be adjusted for flights, traffic and opening hours.
You are picked up from your hotel early in the morning and transferred to the airport for your flight to Izmir. Once you land, a driver meets you at the airport exit, holding a sign with your name, and takes you to the Ephesus tour. With your licensed English-speaking guide you walk the marble streets of one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean.

A small, ornate Roman temple on the main marble street, surrounded by fountains and shops.
A Roman theatre cut into the hillside, with seating for about 25,000 people.
The Hamams and the harbor street that show how Ephesians washed, traded and welcomed visitors from the sea.
A wooded hillside chapel where Mary is believed to have spent her last years, recognized as a pilgrimage destination by the Vatican.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant (please tell us about dietary restrictions when you book). The day ends with a transfer to your Kusadasi hotel for the overnight stay.
After breakfast at the hotel, your tour guide picks you up between 7:30 and 8:00 AM to start the Pamukkale-Hierapolis tour. Pamukkale is known as the “Cotton Castle” because of the striking white terraces formed by carbonate minerals from its hot springs, and the ancient city of Hierapolis rises directly above them.

Ephesus was one of the great cities of the Roman Empire: a busy Aegean port with a theatre for tens of thousands, public baths, shops and a grand library. Walking its marble streets is the closest most travellers will get to stepping into an ancient city instead of looking at one.
Beyond the ruins, Ephesus carries layers of belief. It was home to the Temple of Artemis, an early Christian centre and, according to tradition, the final home of the Virgin Mary. Your guide connects these threads so the stones tell a story.
The Artemision was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today one re-erected column stands in an open field, so your guide's context matters: the scale of what is missing is the story.
Built as a tomb and library for the Roman governor Celsus, its two-storey facade is the image most visitors remember. Niches on the front hold statues symbolizing wisdom, knowledge, fortune and valour.
Halfway along Curetes Street, the small Temple of Hadrian stands among fountains, shops and monuments that show how the main street of Ephesus once looked.
Carved into the slope of Panayir Hill, the theatre is linked in the New Testament to the riot of the silversmiths recorded in the Acts of the Apostles.
The bathhouses and the colonnaded street toward the old harbor explain how a busy port city washed, traded and welcomed travellers from across the sea.
On a wooded hill above Ephesus, a small stone chapel is said to be where Mary spent her last years. Christian and Muslim visitors light candles and tie wishes to the wall outside.

Pamukkale means “Cotton Castle” in Turkish: a hillside of gleaming white travertine terraces filled with warm, mineral-rich water. For thousands of years the springs have drawn visitors who came for healing and rest.
Directly above the terraces lie the ruins of Hierapolis, the Roman and Byzantine city that grew around the springs. Together, the terraces and the ancient city form a UNESCO World Heritage Site you can walk through in a single morning.
Warm, mineral-rich water runs down the slope and deposits calcium carbonate, building the white terraces and shallow pools known as the Cotton Castle. Follow your guide's advice on where walking in the water is permitted.
Founded in the second century BC above the thermal springs, Hierapolis became a Roman and Byzantine spa city. Its main street and Frontinus Gate lead you through the heart of the ruins.
The Temple of Apollo and the nearby Plutonium were tied to Hierapolis' religious life and to the volcanic gases that rose from a cave in the ground.
The Roman theatre keeps much of its richly carved stage building and offers a wide view over the valley from the upper rows.
Stretching along the hillside, the necropolis holds a vast variety of tombs, from tumuli to temple-like house tombs, and is one of the biggest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia.
The Antique Pool is a thermal pool where fallen Roman columns lie under the water. Entrance is not included in the tour price, and your guide can help you buy tickets on site.

Practical suggestions based on the route, the season and the pace of the itinerary.
Two UNESCO sites in two days is a strong introduction to the Aegean. Add Istanbul days before or after for the full picture.
Aim for early light at Ephesus and the terraces of Pamukkale in the morning, when the water and travertine are brightest.
Ask your guide about the Temple of Artemis: what is left is small, but its story is one of the great ones of the ancient world.
Uneven marble in Ephesus and slopes in Hierapolis call for sturdy, broken-in walking shoes.
Pack a swimsuit, towel and water shoes if you want to enter the terraces or the optional Cleopatra Pool.
Summer sun at both sites is strong. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.
Mild days and green landscapes. Ideal for walking the sites.
Hot and busy. Start early and carry plenty of water.
Warm weather, thinner crowds and soft light.
Cooler and quiet, with fewer visitors at the sites.
Local tip: Day 1 starts early with a flight, so pack your swimming gear and a light day bag in your hand luggage, and keep your passport and booking voucher within reach.

“Our visit to turkey was filled with incredible experiences and long lasting memories. Mr Sebahattin was very helpful throughout out planning stages and in the process created a personalised itinerary that fit our needs. Even while in Turkey he was extremely prompt and professional in all his dealings. And enabled us to navigate through the trip effortlessly. The English speaking guides organised by him were very knowledgeable and friendly. The transport and the hotels provided were also of top quality and we were very pleased with the service. Overall a great visit curated by a gem of a person.”
“Sebahattin meticulously planned our customised itinerary at Istanbul perfectly. The arrangement from the first to the last attraction just simply made sense the way he planned it. In addition, when one of our family members was unwell and he found out about it, he immediately sprang into action and made changes to our itinerary to allow for more rest, yet we were able to cover all the attractions after he had made changes to the plan. Finally, we always enjoyed having our wonderful conversations at his office over his delicious Turkish tea. Thank you, Sebahattin, for making our first visit to Turkey such a memorable one. We loved it so much that we are planning to contact you again for an encore!”
